The Hybrid 3D Research Lab

The Hybrid 3D Research Lab (H3D) is a materials engineering research group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria (UVic). Our lab aims to develop a new family of multifunctional hybrid materials with a holistic research approach involving a combination of:

i. Nature-inspired design (taking inspiration from both biological structures and inorganic microstructures)

ii. Rapid prototyping & additive manufacturing

iii. Experimental & computational mechanics

About H3D

The family of hybrid materials includes a broad spectrum of different microscopic and macroscopic architectures.

By leveraging the unique properties of these different architectures, we can specifically tune and optimize the mechanics, thermal-mechanics, and fluid mechanics of these materials to tailor them for specific applications across a wide range of engineering systems and devices.

Our group seeks to advance fields of vital importance to society in the next few decades, including the aerospace, biomedical, environmental, and energy sectors.

Our vision is to help improve our standard of living through sustainable development, improvements in health and safety, and fostering innovation and economic growth in Canada. Additionally, we aim to train the next generation of researchers and engineers in the technological advances made possible by additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, and research & development in hybrid materials.

Research Goals

The three pillars of the research goals of the H3D lab are illustrated in our group logo.
